Herpes Infections

Herpes infections are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which comes in two main types: HSV-1 and HSV-2. These infections are common and can affect the skin, mouth, and genitals, leading to painful blisters or sores.

Types of Herpes Infections:

  • HSV-1 (Oral Herpes): This virus commonly Affects: Mouth, lips, and face. It presents as “cold sores” or “fever blisters” around the mouth. It can also cause sores inside the mouth, sometimes in the eyes and fingers. It is transmitted by direct contact with infected saliva or skin, often through kissing or sharing utensils.
  • HSV-2 (Genital Herpes): It commonly affects genital and anal areas.
Common symptoms are painful blisters or ulcers in the genital area, itching, burning, or discomfort during urination. Usually the ulcers are superficial and multiple. It is transmitted by sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Recurrent episodes are known to occur often necessitating suppressive therapy.

Symptoms of Herpes Infections:

  • Primary Infection: Flu-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes, along with sores or blisters.
  • Recurrent Infections: Milder symptoms; can be triggered by stress, illness, or immune suppression.
  • Asymptomatic Shedding: The virus can be transmitted even when no visible symptoms are present.

Treatment Options:

  • Antiviral Medications: Acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir help reduce symptom severity, shorten outbreak duration, and lower the frequency of recurrences.
  • Symptom Management: Pain relief with over-the-counter painkillers, warm baths, or topical treatments.
  • Prevention: Use of condoms, avoiding direct contact with sores, and antiviral medication to reduce transmission risk.

While there is no cure for herpes, treatment can help manage symptoms and reduce the risk of transmission. It's essential to seek medical advice for accurate diagnosis and management.
